Gordon was raised by his mother after his parents separated due to his father's infidelity. Gordon spent most of his teenage years shuttling back and forth between his mother's apartment on the Upper East Side and the family home on Long Island where he attended Stony Brook High School on Long Island. His first job at age 15 was washing dishes at a restaurant on Long Island.

This led to him working at restaurants all over NYC, culminating in serving as an assistant manager at "The Inn at Stony Brook." Gordon credits this experience with teaching him how to deal with people with disabilities. After high school he attended Stony Brook University where he received his BA degree in psychology and sociology. From there he went to New York University where he received his MA degree in special education and worked as a teacher for four years before leaving to pursue a career as a motivational speaker and consultant.

Gordon has been happily married to his wife, Denise since 1991 and has 3 children: Erin (born 1991), Cole (born 1995) and Lily (born 2001).
